Abigail is a nicely dappled purebred female border collie pup who celebrated her first birthday on April 17, 2009.
Abigail is a dog who must be seen in person in order to be appreciated. Like most black dogs, it's hard to capture her on film. What these pictures DON'T show is the sparkle and smile in her eyes, the quiver of excitement when you talk to her, her infectious joie de vivre! Everyone who meets her immediately likes her.
Abby has most of the standard issue border collie traits which make the breed so desirable: SUPER eager to please, comes FLYING when she's called, very submissive and loving with her people and dogs she likes. She's also a superb athlete and from what we've seen so far just fooling around on agility equipment, she could be an amazing agility competitor: strong, fast, and utterly fearless. She's also a great "frisbee dog". She's not high maintenance however, and as long as she has a nylabone she can be quiet and happy for hours.
Abby loves kids. She will chase cats if they run. Behind a fence, she can be a bit too focused on small dogs, but loose with them she's been fine.
We've had her on sheep and determined that her prey drive is too high for her to be a good herder, but with her strength and intelligence, there are so many other physical activities she will excel at.
Abigail is perfectly obedience trained, walks beautifully on leash, is housebroken and very responsive to correction. She has spent time with a friend in his 80's and has learned not to jump up. She has been great company for him, lying at his feet or wagging her whole body in response to his voice, yet is completely content playing by herself with toys in the back yard.
The perfect home for Abby would be with an athletic person who wants a running or hiking companion or who is into "extreme dog sports". A male dog companion would be a plus, especially if the other dog is calmly dominant - in which case she will be "in love"!
Abigail is being fostered by Grace Cho in San Pedro and Charlotte Bell at South Bay Doggie in Manhattan Beach.
