Welcome!
CHICO
Chico

Temperament
Chico is a very sweet 18-month old Border Collie mix, who is very focused on his owner.  He follows me around everywhere at home and never barks or gets in the way.  He gets a bit excited when I come home and will leap on me, but he'll calm down pretty fast.  He has low to mid level energy, he'll run on walks or at the dog park but at home he's very low energy; he spends some time grooming himself, watching me and just lying around.  He seems ok with around 1.5 hours of walking/day with some other activities sprinkled in. He's a willing participant when I give him affection or training but when I'm doing chores or work, he's content with just sitting there.  He shows no interest towards any toys or playing fetch but willingly participates in obedience training.

Chico doesn't bark at all and even when other dogs bark at him, he doesn't respond.  However he will bark if you go somewhere he can't follow or when he's in his crate.  He can be very persistent in his barking in those situations.

Crate Training
I don't know how well he'll do in a crate at night, he seems more of the sleep on your bed or by your bed type.  He has never had an accident in his crate.

Socialization
Chico is a bit hit and miss when it comes to meeting new dogs or people.  He is usually very calm but depending on the person or the dog he will sometimes bark, snarl and pull at the leash.  There doesn't seem to be a pattern (size, color, loudness).  However he can be calmed down really quickly when I reassure him.  After the initial nervousness, he does very well with people, allowing them to hold his leash and pet him although he prefers that I remain nearby. (He will bark if I am more than 5-10 yards away.)  He usually ignores other dogs after the introductory sniff.  He does ok with cats, he will occasionally bark and charge them but some resistance from the cat will usually send him retreating.  (Again when he decides he wants to go after the cats seem random, most of the time, he ignores them and they can brush by him or come up to him and sniff him w/o a reaction but on a couple of occasions he started barking and chased after them.)  He did not exhibit any dominance issues towards any other dog.

Leash Training
Chico will need some leash training, he pulls quite a bit and he is quite strong.  He usually mellows out around 20-30 minutes into a walk.  He will pull especially hard when it is a trail with a lot of interesting scents, or when he sees rabbits or lizards.  I've been working on his leash training and sometimes he'll walk nicely.  If I stop walking and he starts feelings a strain on the leash, he'll double back and come to my side. However, as soon as we start walking again, he'll quickly forget and get ahead of me and start pulling again.  He is better on runs and is content to run by my side however I would caution biking with him as he will sometimes get distracted by a scent at full speed and veer off course, and he is quite strong.

Miscellaneous
He does ride well in the car, although the last time I drove to San Diego and he threw up in the car.

If you are interested in meeting our dogs, please go on line and fill out an adoption application. We require a pre-approved application to be on file before any meet and greets are scheduled. The electronic application can be found on our website at http://www.bordercolliesinneed.org/border_collie_rescue_and_adoptions/adoption_application.html
