MARA
Mara
Mara is a wonderful 16 month old working line Border Collie, born 4/1/2013 on a working farm.  She came to her current home as a foster when she was 7 weeks old but due to a lack of support was never placed.  Now, with the help and support of Border Collies In Need* and her loving foster, she is looking for a very special forever home that understands and can accommodate her needs as a working dog.

Mara is very sweet and lives to work and please.  She has been to puppy class and has had private training.  She knows many commands including sit, down, stay, leave it, get it, find it, kennel, go bed, shake and relax and is fully housebroken and kennel trained.  She walks well on a leash in a quiet environment but once she is out in the world with distractions, she struggles with focus and wants to work.  Mara absolutely lives to herd . She has never been to herding class but naturally herds children, critters and other dogs.  She would be a fabulous farm dog, herding or agility trial dog.

Mara needs a home with no children where she can enjoy daily exercise and mental stimulation.  Mara loves to run but this is not enough for her.  She needs to work.  She forms a strong bond with her human working partner and will happily follow that person around waiting for a job.  She often offers behaviors to please her companion.  Mara does well with dogs her size or larger but does tend to herd them so timid dogs would not do well with her.

Mara cannot under any circumstances go to a home with children under 14 or a home that often hosts children.  She will herd them.  She will not do well with cats or small dogs.  She will herd them and potentially injure them.  Mara needs a family very familiar with Border Collies or other high drive herding breeds.

She is not a house pet and needs some support.  Mara has a very high drive and instinct and always tries to figure out what I want.  She looks at me every time I say the word "sit" to see if I'm talking to her.  She will maintain herding mode for hours.

Mara is healthy, spayed, up to date on vaccinations and micro chipped.

Mara's new family will be rewarded by her genuine desire to please, her very high intelligence and her sweet nature.

Mara is being fostered in East San Diego County.

If you are interested in meeting our dogs, please go on line and fill out an adoption application.  We require a pre-approved application to be on file before any meet and greets are scheduled.  The electronic application can be found on our website at www.bordercolliesinneed.org/border_collie_rescue_and_adoptions/adoption_application.html
