SCOUT

 |
Scout is a 1-year-old female black & white smooth coated purebred border collie. She came into a high kill shelter as a stray with her brother (he was adopted first since he was so outgoing). Scout was shut down in the shelter, as so many border collies are. She didn't have any confidence without her sibliing. She showed terribly in the shelter, as she would come and bark at you from her kennel and then go back into the corner. When I went to evaluate her, the kennel worker at the shelter had to carry her as she didn't know how to walk on a leash and was shaking with fear. It took a while for her to come to me, and she started to immediately relax when I talked to her and gave her some well deserved affection.
After I got her home, it took Scout less than 2 days to learn to walk on a leash and learn her basic commands. Scout craves her daily walks, however, she can sometimes pull a bit on the leash. Scout wants to please her human, so she takes a correction well, as long as you assume an alpha position with her. Scout thrives on consistency, and an obedience class would really boost her confidence. She is toy motivated and her activity level is medium to medium-high. She would be best placed in a fairly active home that has previous herding breed experience.
Scout is happiest when she is with her human and she wants to forge that close bond with you. She is crate trained and rides well in the car (but you had better tie her as she climbs into the front seat with you). She can be a bit snarky when she first meets other dogs, but settles in with the rest of the pack. Scout can be placed as an only dog, as long as you provide the stimulus for her so that she does not get bored. She is learning her house manners, and has not had any potty accidents. She does not appear to be bothered by cats, just curious, and will retreat if one hisses at her. Scout is a lovely and affectionate dog, but can be a bit shy upon first meeting you. With proper socialization and confidence building, Scout will continue to blossom.
