ANNIE
Annie

Annie on 03/29/2013
If you were to look up the words, brave, spirit, and sweetness in a dictionary you would find a picture of Annie.  Annie is a 3 year old Border Collie that came from the Santa Maria area with special medical needs.  You can read more about her medical journey below.

As her foster Mom and Dad we are here to tell you a little about Annie's dog personality.  First of all, because of her surgery, she is expected to live a full, long healthy life.  She was a model patient and has made a full recovery.  She has a "who needs 4 legs attitude".  Annie has the true Border Collie work ethic and spirit when it comes to play but does have an off button.  She can play ball for hours, and loves long walks but is just as happy laying next to her person.  She should go to a home as a only dog since she does not like to share her people and can get a little snarky with other dogs.  She also has a very strong small prey drive, so please no cats.  It would be wonderful if someone in her new family was home during the day or could be close enough to check in on her as she craves human contact.  She is good with children 5 and over, especially if they will play ball with her.

Annie has lovely house manners, is fully house broken, crate trained, knows "sit", "stay", "no" and walks well on a lead.  She seems to learn very easily.  It has been a privlage and honor to foster Annie.  She is indeed a very special young lady and she deserves and needs a very special family.

Annie's Medical Story

Annie is a 3 year-old female border collie who was desperately in need of rescuing.  Annie was advocated to us on behalf of shelter personnel from Santa Maria in mid January.  She came into the shelter not bearing any weight on her left front leg and they thought she had been hit by a car.  Shelter personnel and BCIN volunteers took an instant liking to Annie, for even though she was in quite a bit of pain, her very sweet personality never waivered.  When BCIN was contacted on her behalf, we refused to turn our back on her, and committed to whatever veterinary care that was required to make her whole again.

BCIN welcomed her into our rescue program with open arms, even though we knew that surgery was probably in her future.  Not much showed on her x-rays, and her injury seemed to be neurologically based.  She was prescribed Gabapentin, along with some Tramadol, to relieve neuropathic pain.  Unfortunately, there was no progress and she still wasn't able to bear any weight on her leg.  In order to give her pain free quality of life, amputation was her only choice.  It was apparent that she was living and coping with daily pain.

Annie's amputation surgery took place on 15 March 2013.  Dr. Mike Zareski at Western Veterinary Group in Lomita, reported later in the day that surgery was a success and that Annie was resting comfortably.  She was a model patient, and she was released to go home on March 17th.  She is convalescing under the tender care of The Jamesons, one of BCIN's foster homes.  Stitches were removed on April 5th.  Her prognosis for a full recovery is guaranteed.

The Jamesons report that Annie is now romping around their yard, and does not appear to miss her limb.  As a matter of fact, Annie has managed to destroy several soccer and basketballs. Annie is a true Border Collie, demonstrating that she has the Border Collie spirit & work ethic, and nothing is going to keep her down for long. It is a joy to see her romping around pain free, and BCIN looks forward to the day that she will be cleared for adoption by Dr. Mike.

Annie has proved to be a very special dog worth saving.  Our volunteers had never seen such a beautiful and loving soul, despite the obvious daily pain that she endured prior to surgery.  We are sending this plea out to you for donations to help offset the cost of Annie's surgery and to support the rescue work we have dedicated our lives to in making a difference, to end dog homelessness and suffering.  No matter how small your donation, every dollar is appreciated.

BCIN is a federally recognized 501(c)3 non profit charity and, as such, all donations are tax deductible.  BCIN is comprised of an unpaid volunteer staff, therefore, all donations are 100% spent for the benefit of the border collies in our rescue program.  If you would like to help Annie, please donate through PayPal ( www.bordercolliesinneed.org/donations.html ) or you can send your donation to our mailing address:
