September 2, 2010 ---
Happy 3rd Anniversary Border Collies In Need! How fast 3 years have gone by since Border Collies In Need (BCIN) incorporated on September 10, 2007. With great pleasure, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you what this grass-roots rescue has accomplished in the last 3 years.
To date, BCIN has made a difference to approximately 350 Border Collies in finding their new forever homes. Of course this would not have been possible without such wonderful adopters who have opened their hearts and homes to the rescue dogs in our program. BCIN can now boast that we have 2nd and 3rd time adopters. It is such an honor to have your trust and have your confidence in our volunteers and rescue program.
BCIN is committed to spread the good word about on-going rescue efforts through community out-reach programs. BCIN is a rescue ambassador to Purina Pro Plan Rally to Rescue. This year, BCIN’s submittal of Buddy’s story was chosen as one of ten finalists in their nationwide Doing More for Pets 2010 Contest. Please help Border Collies in Need win $5,000 in dog food by voting for Buddy. Buddy's inspiring story of triumph over tragedy deserves to be told....he is a 10-12 year old senior Border Collie mix who was used as a bait dog for confidence building for dog fighting. In the words of his adopter, Joe Vita, he is "A Buddy Like No Other". His full story can be read on our website. If you have not already voted, please do so at www.RallyToRescue.org before October 1st.
BCIN was also selected as one of the rescues to participate as part of the Best Friends Animal Society Network Charities Program. Best Friends Animal Society wants to support local rescue groups that are working to save lives every day in their communities. This allows BCIN to create our own mini-website via the Best Friends Network. As a Network Charity, BCIN can now showcase our activities, and connect with tens of thousands of animal lovers excited to help us continue and expand vital programs.
Border Collies in Need is proud to be participating as a Best Friends Network Charity in the 2010 Strut Your Mutt Fundraising Walk. BCIN encourages you to support our rescue program on the morning of September 19th at the Santa Monica Pier by either participating as a BCIN Dog Pack Member for the walk or by sponsoring one of our dog pack members. BCIN is strutting our mutts to raise funds for our emergency medical needs dogs. Information and details can be found at www.tinyurl.com/sponsorBCIN-INC.
We’re excited to announce that you can now also follow Border Collies In Need on Facebook. We have grown to almost 500 friends, so please join us at www.facebook.com/BCIN.Inc. Please encourage your dog loving family members and friends to participate in our daily activity digest.
Even with all of our accomplishments, there is still so much work to do. Sadly, BCIN has seen no end in sight to the recession as it pertains to animals. The vast numbers of Border Collies we are seeing in shelters and relinquishment inquires have been overwhelming. BCIN is committed to saving as many as we can, but without foster homes, we only have space for a fraction that needs to be rescued. Even with declining adoptions, our volunteer foster homes deserve kudos for their dedication and hard work. They are the lifeline to our organization and I want to personally thank each one of them, as well as to all of our volunteers who tirelessly help with our adoption events.
BCIN is solely dependent upon private donations to maintain our rescue program. Our costs to maintain the dogs in our program remain unchanged, especially veterinary costs. Please consider donating to our organization, no matter how small the amount. 100% of every dollar is spent on the well being of our dogs, as BCIN is comprised solely of unpaid volunteers. Border Collies in Need is a federally recognized 501(c)3 non profit organization, and as such, all donations are tax deductible.
BCIN welcomes skilled-based volunteers, such as those who possess a financial, legal, veterinary, artistic, journalism, fundraising, or information technology background, just to name a few areas of professional expertise. Please drop us a line at rescue@BorderColliesInNeed.org if you can help.
Our reward for the dedicated rescue work we do is when we hear from you, especially when we receive an update & photo about a dog you adopted from us. Please let us know how we are doing, and if you have any suggestions, feel free to drop us a line.
On behalf of all of the volunteers for Border Collies In Need, thank you for supporting our rescue program.

With the Fourth right around the corner, we'd like to urge you to take care with your pets during this holiday. Having been bred to hear a distant shepherd's whistle, Border Collies are hyper sensitive to sound. While other breeds may not be able to hear these sounds, inaudible to humans, Border Collies cannot ignore them and may become fearful and panicked, trying to escape, or even aggressive...READ MORE |

Please help Border Collies In Need receive a $10,000 donation from BISSELL Homecare Inc. Contest details are below.
BCIN adopters can enter your pets in the BISSELL Most Valuable Pet (MVP) Contest at http://www.bissell.com. Our friends at BISSELL are accepting pet photos from the public through March 25, 2010. That could be YOU!
Four runners up will also be featured on BISSELL packaging and have donations of $5,000 or $1,000 made to your favorite pet cause. BCIN is hoping that it's our chance to BE that favorite pet cause.
I am reaching out to you to encourage you to submit a photo of your most valuable pet at http://www.bissell.com and then encourage everyone you know to vote for him. Border Collies In Need wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving, and may your home and heart be filled with love and laughter. On this Thanksgiving Day, our rescue organization gives thanks and acknowledges your grateful support and loyalty in helping our quest to reduce border collie homelessness. BCIN extends Thanksgiving blessings to each and every one of you.
|
 |
Border Collies In Need offers these tips for a safe Thanksgiving with your companion animal:
- Never feed turkey bones to pets. A turkey bone can splinter and become lodged in the throat or further down the digestive system. Bone fragments can lacerate the delicate tissues as they move down the throat. Also advise guests not to feed your pets.
- Avoid feeding fatty leftovers. Rich fatty foods like turkey skin, ham and gravy can lead to stomach upset and other problems in pets. Chocolate, caffeine, and alcohol are all toxic to pets and should not be given to them.
- Continue pet feeding routine. Pets thrive on routine. It is best to feed your pet their regular meal before guests arrive. This will help keep them regular and reduce the temptation for begging and stealing.
|
- Dispose of leftovers properly. Keep food on tables and counters out of reach of pets. Make sure garbage and leftovers are safely disposed of right away, as even trained pets may be tempted to counter-surf, raid the garbage or outside trash.
- Keep pets safe and comfortable. If expecting company for Thanksgiving, arrange for a safe and quite area for your pets. Pets that have their own room will feel safer; less stressed, and won't be able to accidentally escape out the front door. Another option is to use a pet gate or play pen to house your pet nearby the festivities so they can still see what is going on, but be kept safely indoors.
- Ensure pets have I.D. Keep current identification on your pet at all times. In the event that your pet gets loose you will have a better chance of having them returned if they have proper identification.

A LETTER FROM OUR FOUNDER ON OUR 2ND ANNIVERSARY
As Border Collies In Need (BCIN) completes its second year since incorporating September 10, 2007, I would like to take this opportunity to share with you that BCIN has made a difference to approximately 200 Border Collies in finding their forever homes. First and foremost, I thank all of our adopters who have opened their hearts and homes to the rescue dogs in our program.
Unfortunately, as a result of the recession, BCIN has seen an influx of Border Collies in the shelters. Adoptions have declined over this last year, and our wonderful foster homes have really struggled to rescue as many as possible. Their hard work and dedication never ceases to amaze me in their quest to save “just one more” every time our program is at full capacity. BCIN has a wide demographic range of foster homes from Paso Robles to San Diego. I personally commend each and every one of you for a job well done, your resolve, and especially for your volunteerism in supporting BCIN. |
Foster homes are the lifeline of every rescue organization, and BCIN is no exception. BCIN can only rescue as many as we have allotted foster spaces. Fostering is truly a rewarding experience which provides a new “new leash on life". BCIN is always looking for new foster homes, and we welcome your participation in making a difference, one dog at a time. For more information, please see our website at www.bordercolliesinneed.org/volunteer.html.
BCIN is solely dependent upon private donations to maintain our rescue program. Our costs to maintain the dogs in our program remain unchanged, especially veterinary costs. |
 |
Sadly, harder economic times have affected our organization, as well. Please consider donating to our organization, no matter how small the amount. 100% of every dollar is spent on the well being of our dogs, as BCIN is comprised solely of unpaid volunteers. I remain in awe how far our foster homes can make a dollar stretch, when they convert a dollar to “rescue dollars". Border Collies in Need is a federally recognized 501(c)3 non profit organization, and as such, all donations are tax deductible.
Additionally, BCIN welcomes skilled-based volunteers, such as those who possess a financial, legal, veterinary, artistic, journalism, fundraising, or construction background, just to name a few areas of professional expertise. BCIN’s immediate need is for kennel runs for our dogs, and we are in the process of seeking a company to donate them or a cost effective source from which to procure them. Please drop us a line at rescue@BorderColliesInNeed.org if you know of anyone who can help or a source for us to consider.
The recent fires in Southern California have impacted several local rescues and shelters, and I am proud that BCIN networked to assist those involved in emergency rescue efforts. We recently made a post to our website to one such organization, and thank you for assisting us in getting the plea for help out by contacting public forums.
Lastly, we really enjoy hearing from you, especially when we receive an update & photo about a dog you adopted from us. This is our reward for the dedicated rescue work we do.
On behalf of all of the volunteers for Border Collies In Need, thank you for supporting our rescue program.

The Fourth of July is not a celebratory time for any dog, let alone the Border Collies with supersonic hearing. READ MORE HERE...
Two dogs have gone missing. Please visit our urgent alerts page to see who they are. They could be hiding in your neighborhood.
It's RAINING BC's! What you see is not all in BCIN foster care. Rescued dogs are placed into quarantine to monitor for kennel cough and other diseases often found in shelters. Once they are cleared for release they will be posted. Visit and refresh pages often, as you may find your new best friend waiting with a smile. |

SEPTEMBER 10, 2008

Border Collies In Need turned one year old on September 10th! Along the way we have grown our organization, learned through trial and error and the help of others, and met some truly wonderful people with big hearts. Most importantly, we are proud to announce that we have been able to unite 110 dogs with loving homes. Although this is just a small dent in ending dog homelessness in the world, our diligence, and yours, has meant the difference between life and almost certain death for these wonderful animals. Thank you all!
Be looking for a newsletter in the near future, where we share some of the last year's highlights and updates on our adopted dogs! |

SEPTEMBER 6, 2008
It's hard to believe that it's been nearly a month since we've updated the news section, but time really does fly by! Here's the latest:
- We have added more events to our schedule, including a second Saturday at Petsmart this month. See our events page for more info.
- We've rescued another Border Collie with costly medical needs. Trooper is a gorgeous male Border Collie who, we discovered quickly post-bail, had a break in his leg that had become seriously infected. He was severely dehydrated and in immense pain. Our vet immediately hospitalized him and started him on antibiotics, pain meds and IV fluids. Surgery was scheduled which would require pins and sedation.
Read more about Trooper here.
- Lumber is a Collie mix who will be euthanized at the end of next week unless he is rescued and, unfortunately, BCIN cannot make room for him in our program. He is very frightened, just shakes in the kennel and does not show well. He needs someone to take him under their wing and work with him. Do you know of anyone who might come thru for a harder case?
Lumber is a four year old neutered male Tri Smooth Collie mix. His impound number is A617659,and he is at the Rancho Cucamonga Animal Care Center, located at 11780 Arrow Route in Rancho Cucamonga. Their phone number is (909) 466-7387. Lumber is not doing well in a kennel environment and desperately needs your help.

Lumber
For more about how Border Collies do in kennels, please read "Relinquishing Your Border Collie".
- Molly has been moved to a foster home where she is continuing her rehabilitation with short walks and pool therapy, and is doing very well.
Molly's story can be read here.
- Lacey was returned by her adopted family because she kept jumping fences to be near her people. Very soon after her return to our program Lacey was tentatively accepted as a canine candidate into the program for National Disaster Search Dog Foundation! If you are unaware of this program, these are the amazing dogs that search for people buried alive in rubble after natural and man-made disaster. You'll recall seeing them in action after the September 11th attack on the World Trade Center. To find out more, visit The Search Dog Foundation site. You will also find a video of these dogs being trained by visiting our Resources/Activities page.
- If you are not following the story of Hope, it is well worth your read. This little girl was found feral and wounded, and we believe she almost certainly came from a puppy mill. Read "Hope's Diary" here.
- What would you like to see added to the Border Collies In Need site? Your webmaster would like to hear your thoughts.
|
 |
AUGUST 12, 2008
- We've added a new chapter to Hope's Diary!
|
 |
AUGUST 9, 2008
- We've added an adoption event to the calendar. This coming Saturday, August 16th, we will have some of our Border Collies available for viewing at Petsmart Rancho Cucamonga from 11 - 4. Filling out an Adoption Application before the event is strongly recommended and helps us find the perfect match for you! Petsmart Cucamonga is located at 10940 Foothill Blvd in Rancho Cucamonga. Phone:(909) 481-8700
- We will be offering several new dogs for adoption in the next few days. For more information, keep an eye on our Adoptions page. They will be posted as soon as we have photos available.
- In case you've missed it, the reading room is now open, and several new stories, articles, and poems have appeared. This week we have added “No Chains Or Pens For Life”, an article about the hazards of chaining dogs. Additionally, you will find several new links scattered on our pages, such as the new Free Pet Safety Pack offered by ASPCA, and newly-formed Best Friends Network Legal Animal, where you can get involved to help improve animal welfare laws.
- Do you know a pet owner in danger of foreclosure that may be facing the difficult decision of what to do with their four-legged loved one? Border Collies do not do well in shelters! Please send them to the links in the sidebar of the Adoptions page. Foreclosure Pets are suffering due to this crisis and several avenues of help are being offered! We will be expanding these links into their own page in the near future, so look for that, too.
- With limited foster homes, and our program currently filled to capacity, we are simply not able to take in the mixes that are now filling the shelters. We continue to strongly urge you to check your local shelters, as they are exploding with mixed-breed Border Collies that desperately need a home. For a list of shelters in your area, please visit our Shelters page.
- Border Collies In Need Adoptees in Times Square! Stay tuned!
- For those of you who have recently lost a beloved animal friend, we have posted the well-known poem, "Rainbow Bridge" in a special place. If you would like to commemorate your loved one (at no charge, of course), send us up to two good photos of your pet, with your words of remembrance, and we will post it for you.
- Having your animal go missing is a terrifying and heart-wrenching ordeal. As a commitment to the animal community, we have added a page for Missing Dog Alerts. We currently have three dogs listed on this page. If your dog goes missing, we will be happy to assist by posting a photograph and description.
