BARKLEY
Barkley

Barkley is approximately 18 months and is a male border collie.  He is a black and white traditionally marked semi rough coated border collie.  Please keep checking back on updates for Barkley, as we are getting to know him better.  Below are our initial observations about him.

This sweet dog is very submissive and soft.  He does not take a hard command and would be best placed in an environment that is quite and calm without a lot of stimulus.  Barkley lacks confidence, but he so badly wants to please.  He just does not know what to do and is looking for guidance from his person.  Barkley is a true diamond in the rough.  He is looking for a patient and kind person to show him the way and help him blossom into the awesome dog we know he will become.  Barkley would thrive with consistency in his life, not only with exercise but with mental stimulation.

He does do some minor submissive urination, however, this will easily be corrected under the right tutelage.  Dogs who urinate in submission are usually shy, anxious, or timid and may have a history of being treated harshly or punished inappropriately.  A dog who is unclear of the rules and unsure how to behave will be chronically insecure.  He urinates and adopts submissive postures to mollify anyone he perceives as a "leader" and to avoid punishment.  Some advice in successfully dealing with this issue is to eliminate any behavior that he sees as dominant, teaching commands using positive reinforcement training methods, keeping a routine environment as consistent as possible, and most importantly, NEVER scold him when he does piddle.  Ignore it when he does.

Barkley is a special dog that needs some work and training from a dedicated handler.  He would not be suited for the first time herding breed owner . Barkley craves attention and would be a wonderful dog for a person who understands this breed.  During these last couple of weeks, we have seen an improvement in him, and know that he will continue to thrive to be a model border collie.

If you are interested in meeting our dogs, please go on line and fill out an adoption application. We require a pre-approved application to be on file before any meet and greets are scheduled. The electronic application can be found on our website at http://www.bordercolliesinneed.org/border_collie_rescue_and_adoptions/adoption_application.html
