DHARMA
Hattie
We thought we had found Dharma (now known as Hattie) a good home 4 years ago.  Dharma is very sweet; your typical eager-to-please 5 1/2 -year old female border collie.  She just needs someone who can devote more time and direction than her previous owner was able to.  For someone who is willing to have patience with her during this transition, she has great potential and you will see what a cute, fun personality she has to offer.  Dharma loves going for walks, and likes to play with her kong and rope toys.  She enjoys riding in the car and is ready to learn.  She requires a little extra time to develop her comfort in new situations or with new people and she would be best suited in a child-free home.  Dharma has made great progress with her fear/anxiety issues in the four years since she was adopted.  However, she was jumped by another dog, and now has reactivity to them.  She should be placed as an only dog, and she will not make a good dog park dog, or one off leash.  She loves being around people and wants nothing more than to forge a close bond with you.  Dharma is obedient, housebroken, rides well in a car, and has nice manners.

If you are interested in meeting our dogs, please submit an adoption application.  We require a pre-approved application to be on file before any meet and greets are scheduled.  The electronic application can be found on our website at www.bordercolliesinneed.org/border_collie_rescue_and_adoptions/adoption_application.html

Dharma is a beautiful, traditionally marked female black and white semi rough coated purebred Border Collie who is approximately 18 months of age.  She is on the smaller side of BC females, weighing in at about 33 lbs.

Dharma is quite shy but warms up to you once she gets to know you.  If you move too quickly around her when trying to pet her, she wets herself.  This condition is known as submissive urination.  Dogs that submissively urinate expect that their behavior will stop "threats" from humans, but well meaning humans continue leaning over, petting, and trying to comfort their dog as they would another person.  Dogs see this as a continued threat rather than a comforting gesture.  Punishing your dog will only exacerbate the situation.  Submissive urination is a commonly encountered, normal canine behavior.  It is considered a behavior problem because humans do not want their dogs to urinate in socially unacceptable locations and situations.  However, submissive urination is easily manageable.  By teaching owners a little about canine social systems and communication, veterinary technicians can help them understand their dog’s behavior.  After owners understand and avoid eliciting the behavior, the submissive urination stops.  Confidence building activities between owners and dogs can help end submissive urination and strengthen the owner-dog bond.

Dharma is a cuddle bug and craves being part of her human and canine pack.  Dharma would prefer a home that is quiet with adults only, no children please.  Dharma needs a dog savvy and dedicated person who will be patient with her and is committed to building her confidence.  Dharma is a great dog and has so much potential with the proper guidance...she is a border collie, after all. Personal note from Dharma’s foster mom:  I have had 2 female dogs who had severe submissive urination and 1 male with submissive urination and defecation issues because they were so badly abused.  I am happy to report that today that all 3 dogs are well adjusted dogs and show no signs of their previous condition, even though they were all over 2 years of age when rescued.
