SWEEP
Sweep
August 2008 with updated photos
Sweep is a 5 year-old purebred semi-rough coat black & white border collie.  Despite the previous sad biography that we had written about him below, Sweep is now a different dog, looking for his forever home!  His original foster mom did a fantastic job of bringing him around so he can be adopted.  BCIN changed foster homes recently to see how he would settle in and react in a different environment.  Wow!  What a beautiful and soulful dog, none of the baggage that you would associate with a rescue dog who has had a tough life.  Sweep is a perfect gentleman and houseguest.  He just wants to bond so closely with you and oh, the way he looks at you with those dreamy bright eyes!  He settles right down in the house and is happiest when he is next to you.  Such a grateful, affectionate, and snuggly dog, and he will sleep with you if you let him.

He has not had any accidents in the house, so it would be safe to say that he is housebroken.  He rides very well in the car, walks beautifully on a leash, has excellent manners and recall.  A soft voice and soft command is all he needs, as he is very obedient.   Sweep has been fine with my female and male pack of dogs, but they are submissive.  Since he is very much of an omega dog, he should be placed as an only dog or with a submissive dog (opposite gender is always recommended).  He likes going to the dog park and is a bit of a water baby.  Don't let his age sway you, as there is plenty of BC energy--he has no problem with keeping up with my 2 yr old BC.  Sweep will do what you ask of him--he can be active one minute or a laid back couch potato the next.  He is not aggressive with humans with his food, but can be a bit snarky around other dogs with food, so feeding separately is recommended.  Although Sweep is good to mind when called off of my cats, I am still recommending a home without cats or other small animals.  He would do well with older children and will make a wonderful, loyal best friend canine candidate.  Sweep is a truly special dog that has taught us all so much.  I will miss him lots when he is adopted.
Sweep
April 2008
Sweep is a dark & handsome 5 year old purebred Border Collie. This boy has had a rough time before coming into our rescue program.  His fate was to live life on a logging chain, denying him the pleasures of what BCs are bred to do and enjoy in life.  Sweep was riddled with wounds that had scabbed over from being attacked by other dogs, leaving his face speckled with white hairs from those scars.  If that wasn't bad enough, he was entirely infested with ticks.  His semi rough coat was as dry and lifeless, as were his beautiful amber eyes.  This poor boy was beaten down and it was apparent that his spirt had been broken!

Sweep is a true testament of the power of TLC.  His wounds are healing, his coat is starting to gain luster, but best of all, his eyes are now showing gleam and have come to life again.  Without a doubt, Sweep is one of the sweetest, most appreciative, and affectionate dogs you will ever meet.  Because of his past life, he is always on guard with the other fosters as if he is worried that the other dogs will jump him.  He would probably do best in a home with no other dogs or a very kind and submissive female.  Sweep guards food and is rather vocal about it.  He had good weight upon intake into our program, so this guarding issue seems to be what he perceives as his only form of control.
Due to this, he should not be placed in a home with toddlers or free fed.  While food can be taken from him without a problem, we have no dog savvy little ones around to test him.  Typical of this breed, Sweep has a prey drive, so a home without cats is required.  He will herd them and if they do not move, like sheep, he will go in for a grip to make them move.  Sweep has been evaluated on sheep and he would make an excellent ranch dog for light herding work with the proper training.  Sweep uses a doggie door which is different than being housebroken.  He loves to ride in the truck and be with his person.

Sweep is looking for a loving & patient human that he can trust and who will nurture him back to his full potential.  He will require an experienced adopter who is familiar with this breed; one who knows how to correct him without being physical.  He is very soft and responds extremely well to soft spoken commands.  Sweep is a special dog that will not appeal to the average adopter.  BCIN will only consider serious applicants who can relate to his story and are willing to invest their time, energy, and emotion to make him completely whole again.  BCIN has committed a long term place in our rescue program until that special adopter appears.  Sweep is so deserving and he is a wonderful dog!
